When originally planning our trip our first thoughts were about  a Land Rover or a Landcruiser but recent diesel models were not readily available in the US. A Ford Sportsmobile, the final choice, only came  about by pure chance, having stumbled on one in upstate NY.  Its specification was impressive - a rugged 4x4 camper van small enough to fit inside a shipping container but considerably larger and more comfortable than our original alternatives.
Sportsmobile allow a customer to have complete control over the design and layout - but since time was short our only option was standard RB50 version. www.sportsmobile.com
And what a fantastic choice it has proven to be - powerful, agile, comfortable, sturdy, remarkably roomy and fits in a standard parking space!
It also fits inside a high top container which makes for safe shipping.  Dimensions: 7'1x20'x7'11'' (9'6'' with roof box)
Internal rear view
These 2 views illustrates inside the van with the roof raised. A full bed can be lowerd to add to the back shelf or left up for standing room over 6 foot.  The design is tried and tested classic VW camper layout.  Internal front view With the roof down the back is still very accessible, including the lower bed which makes for a quieter warmer set up if sub zero outside or parked in a noisy location. Note swivelling passenger seat.
